The term seven- year itch that comes from a famous movie called “The Seven Year Itch” in that the main actor, Tom faced the difficulties in his marriage that he was >by being attracted by the >his beautiful neighbor and imagined that he had an affair. After the movie became famous, also, the term seven- year itch became well-known. The seven- year itch means that when people have been married for about seven years, they start to feel that the marriage is plain and boring, so they may want a passionate relationship, new sexual experience, and even have an affair. There are different opinions of the seven- year itch - some people consider that the itch is normal and even have >ing an affair is normal, too. On the contrary, some people cannot accept the itch and needless to say >not mention to have an affair.
In tradition, the Asia >Asians and most people in the country which belong to Catholicism or Christianity believe that a marriage should at least maintain a whole life to keep its sanctity.
However, people have become more open-minded in today’s society. Lots of factors-such as financial stress, argument and affairs-might lead people to their divorce. Each of us is a free individual, but sometimes we are bound by the marriage; besides a large amount of alimony must be paid when we finally get our divorce done. For those reasons, I am strongly against an everlasting marriage since most people are like the character Tom Ewell in the movie “The seven-year itch” We all have a difficult time staying in clam.
Take my birthing place Taiwan for an example. According to a statistics given out by Ministry of the Interior, the country that owns >has the highest divorce rate in Asia and happens to be the top 4 around >of the world in 2013 is Taiwan. In Taiwan, the divorce rate this year has reached a new high to 47 percents. As an average, one would be divorced in each of the two couples, and one would be divorced every ten minutes. A British research showed that a marriage goes stale after 10 years and 11 months in England. The survey said that after a decade of marriage the romance has often died and partners have become fed up with their daily routines. 10-year marriage is much longer than the marriage in other countries, even longer than the marriage in Taiwan. Most of the people around >in the world gradually lose the energy to complete their marriage.
In Germany, a politician Gabriele Pauli told reporters at the launch of her campaign manifesto. She wanted marriage to expire after seven years. "The basic approach is wrong ... many marriages last just because people believe they are safe," she told reporters. "My suggestion is that marriages expire after seven years." After the seven-year mark, options for dissolution or renewal should be available to couples, she noted. This suggestion is fairly suitable for Taiwan which has the highest rate of divorce in Asia. Needless to say that the property and the child’s custody of a couple should be well arranged before they get marry >ied. Our government must also execute some policies that back up citizens in order to create an ideal society.
As mentioned above, the divorce rate has become higher in Taiwan in recent years, and the viewpoint of the German politician toward a marriage, the two supports indicate that people can get divorced to make their life happy when there are problems which are difficult to be solved between husband and wife. Also, everyone is supposed to have the seven- year itch because of the unhappy and plain marriage. In order to make people live happily, when a marriage faces its problems and difficulties that never be overcome, people should be brave to get away from it, and not try to maintain the surface of peace. In addition, do not be shamed to get divorced because it is normal in modern world.

Since I began to learn German, I have gradually realized the vastly difference between Chinese and German in many dimensions through myself and German teacher’s sayings. I am going to discuss the three discrepancies which are the most obvious and related to college students.
Eating is the most consequential >material thing that supports human being to live. In Chinese, there are countless kinds of dishes, such as fried spring rolls, dumplings, pork chop with sweet and sour sauce, fried rice and fried noodles, etc., just like numerous and dense stars in the murky night. Likewise, there are also various ways to cook, for example, poach, pan-fry, stir-fry, steam, stew, braise…and so on. Different ways of cooking create a variety of Chinese delicacies. By contrast, in Germany there are not as many dishes as in Chinese. German’s staple diets are salads, potatoes, and wheaten food, such as bread and noodles. A basket of bread, a dish of meat with mashed potato or French fries, a bowl of soup and a glass of drink are the most abundant meal in a day, and normally it is at dinner. More often than not, Germans only eat a sausage with bread as their lunch. Except lunch or dinner, Germans have cold food at >for the rest of meals; unlike above >Germans, Chinese are used to having hot food at each meal. Appearance is the most crucial and immediate factor to judge a human at first. In Chinese, beyond half of the students pay much attention on >to dressing, hair style, and make-up. Therefore, each student has their own fashion style. In the past few years, the trend of fashion was influenced by Japan and Korea. Obviously, no matter boys or girls in Taiwan, they all follow the foreign steps of fashion. However, in German, most of the students are not that concerned about dressing. A T-shirt, jeans, and a normal pair of sport shoes are fairly common on a German student. It does not mean that German student do not care about “fashion”. At the same time, we can also discover an interesting phenomenon - German adolescents do not like to have fringe, no matter full fringe or side fringe, because they think having fringe is too childish and immature. They would rather just have a simple hair style in order to look even riper >more mature and wiser than cut a fringe so as to look much younger and cuter. It is far from Chinese teenagers’ general notions. When Chinese mention the most popular amusements, the first activities that come to their minds are indoor distractions >attraction, such like shopping, going karaoke, hanging out with friends, going to watch movie, tasting diverse kinds of dainties together…Although more and more people gradually love to go outing, mass of people would still like to stay indoor instead. Nevertheless, German people are fond of going to the beach, woods or riverside to enjoy the scene of nature. Outdoor pastimes – playing soccer, rowing a boat, driving a bike and lying on the grass to enjoy the genial sunshine are their usual recreations in their leisure time. On the other hand, people in Germany also enjoy being alone. They call those people who stays alone “ein Einzelgänger”. On opposite >the contrary, Chinese people are always used >using to do everything together.
Those national habitual behaviors of these two nations have their own values of existence. There are no “better” or “worse” nations. When we face the dissimilarities, we should esteem >respect and tolerate them. Through continuing interaction, we can absorb their advantages and get out >rid of our shortcomings by make our country, our society and the whole citizens scale the heights and arrive at the state of bliss.

The Definition of First Love

Some people believe that fist love means that someone must be in the first relationship with his/her lovers; on the contrary, other people believe that it means someone has a crush on his/her lover at the first time in his/her life, and no matter whether the lover loves him/her or not. According to the Urban Dictionary, the words “first love” means “you fall in love with the first person you ever had truly feelings for. It does not matter if it happened when you were six, or sixty-six. It also does not matter if he or she loved you back. All those matters are that at one point in time, he or she was the first person you ever loved and wanted to be with.”
Take my college friend Alice for an example; she was also my classmate in senior high school. She fell in love with a cold boy in the next class when she was a freshman in senior high school. She always went to his classroom chatting with someone in order to have a glance at him, joined the same math coaching school with the boy for the sake of being in the narrow classroom with him and simultaneously studying, almost every day after school stayed at the playground to watch him basketball training. All her conversations with me were about “the boy”, such as, “What does the boy wear today?”, “How many times do I see him today?”, and “Why was he late for school this morning?” Her mood was up and down with the boy’s each action and saying; therefore, her whole life was occupied with the boy. She dreamed of being with him one day; for that, she could really do everything for him then. Nevertheless, he gave her a cold shoulder all the time. At the beginning, she hid her affection secretly, but before the graduation ceremony she plucked up her huge courage to confess her feelings to him. Little did her know that he regarded her as an invisible person and even said something extremely cruel to my pitiful and faithful friend just because of her homely and unattractive appearance. Needless to say, she broke down and wept at first, and then she turned into rage. Nowadays the deep, miserable, and sorrowful recollections have gradually faded from her memories, and I do not hear her talking anything about “the boy” anymore. Although she was once hurt by the heartless boy mercilessly, maybe she still loves him up to now; because she sometimes yet searches the information about the boy.
The first love is you are in love with one person that you will never forget, and he/she will leave in the bottom of your heart forever. At the moment you do not care about what you will lose in this cannot-regret relationship. Your first love will be the one who will be the hardest to get over, the one that can still make you smile even when you have the worst day ever, and the one who after hurting you, and you will still love them back. Your first love never leaves from your mind.

INTRODUCTION
Green papaya salad is the most popular dish in Thailand according to my Thai aunt’s sayings. It is a Northeastern food that is eaten with sticky rice and other Northeastern dishes such as laab, beef salad and bamboo shoot salad. In the meanwhile, you can also take it for dessert even not in meal. People of all ages and sexes accept it. The two most popular types of green papaya salad are dried shrimp and salted crab. Green papaya salad with dried shrimp and peanuts is called som tum thai. The green papaya salad with salted crab is called som tum pbooh. The majority of the ingredients are the same. My mother usually makes it with dried shrimp cause >because of the special smell of dried shrimp.
THE PREPARATION
There are many ingredients that need to be prepared, including five cherry tomatoes, one tablespoon cut dried shrimps, two chili peppers, one and one half tablespoons of fish sauce, one clove garlic, a green papaya without shredded, one tablespoon lime juice, one and one >a half tablespoons of sugar, and two tablespoons of peanuts. This recipe is for two servings. The preparation will take you nearly ten minutes, but the preparation including the whole steps only needs about twenty minutes.
THE STEPS
There are some steps that we can follow to do the dish. If you can buy a pre-shredded papaya, that is great because you can omit this step. First, you need to use a sharp knife to peel the green papaya, and slice it in half and use a spoon to scrape out the seeds. Then you cut the papaya lengthwise to make long strips or use the largest grater you have, grate the papaya, or you can use a potato peeler to make thin and ribbon-like strips. When you finish it, place it in a bowl. Second, you add a clove of garlic in another bowl, and pound with the pestle a few times to mash them; it will increase the dish’s taste. Third, you add chili peppers and crush them just enough to release the hotness, unless you want your salad really hot. Then, you add a part of the shredded green papaya, it will help to mix the garlic and chilies; and pound some more. However, you cannot pound the papaya too hard to make it soaked, it should be crunchy instead. Next, you add the sugar and add fish sauce; then pound some more again to mix the sugar and the sauce with other ingredients. For a vegetarian, you can omit the dried shrimps and use soy sauce instead of fish sauce. At the same time, you have to make sure everything in the bowl is well mixed; if not, pound some more to make it mix well. Soon, you add the half cherry tomatoes, and pound a few times to get the juice out of the tomatoes and let the juice mix with other ingredients. Now you add the lime juice and the chopped dried shrimps, and you need to make sure the shrimps are well mixed with the sauce. However, some people use tamarind in place of lime. At last step, you add the rest of the shredded green papaya and the peanuts. However, if you prefer not to have the peanuts without, then it can be omitted. This dish is an individual dish that you will find out your unique taste. Finally, you need to pound all the ingredients at least >at last to make sure that they are well mixed while mixing with a spoon. There is a key point that you must remember is that you cannot pound the papaya too hard to make it soggy, because it should be crunchy. When you finish all the steps, you can dish this green papaya salad into a plate. Then it is the delicious green papaya salad.
THE REFLECTION
Although the whole processes are simple and does not take so much time, the preparation for the ingredients is troublesome and time-consuming. Every time my mother makes this dish, she always needs many family members help her to cut the green papayas into ribbon-like strips. The affection for each family member unconsciously is warmed up and the relationship between each other are >is getting closer in a comfortable and pleasant family atmosphere. Take a mouthful of green papaya salad in a hot summer; the sour, sweet but a bit spicy taste will totally refresh you and make you feel just like in Thailand.

New Year’s Resolution – Get up Early (3) - Final Version

Total Score:16.5
When I was a senior high school student, I needed to get up at 5 o’clock to take buses everyday because of the remote school. After I got into college, I felt I can get more freedom than before. Therefore, I started to let myself loose. I did not almost go to the first class at eight o’clock, because I gradually cannot get up at six o’clock in the latest one year.
I had a bad habit of doing things dilatorily. Every time after I came home, I was first used to playing computer, having a dinner and watching television. When I realized that I had homework to do, it was usually about ten or eleven o’clock. Then I would reluctantly sit at the desk, started to do what I should do. I did not finish my homework until the wee hours. A second cause was I did not find out my main goal in life. Getting up, going to school, taking classes, going home, having dinner, taking a shower and then going to bed – my life was completely occupied by these dull, fixed and regular trifles. I had never imagined how boring the life would be, just like having dishes without any condiment. Sometimes I would ponder long and deeply where my future was, what I should do. When I felt wearier of these trifles things, I was more easily be distracted by my amusements. A final cause is – I LOVE NIGHTS! I greatly enjoyed doing many things at a still and black night before I went to bed, such as listening to music or radio, reading novels, watching horror movies, chatting with my younger sister, or even just pondering about something. Sometimes I would do these things all night.
However, I started to gradually break up the bad habit of staying up after I became a double-major student. Hence, the first point on my list of New Year’s Resolution is “Get up Early!” Needless to say, I did know the bad influence of staying up on human’s body before; yet the most decisive reason to make me change was – I have already found out my goal in life, the goal that could make me full of energy and hope, go ahead and do not hesitate. Therefore, I wanted to go back to the right pace, so I primarily changed the basic point – lifestyle. As a proverb goes – “The early bird catches the worm.” Morning is truly the most significant time in the whole daytime because human is >are clearest in the morning. We can do hundreds of meaningful thing effectively and energetically without disturbance before this world awakes from the dawn. Take myself as an example; I used to get up just a few hours before the classes began. I was always in a great hurry after being awake; therefore, I usually could not have a breakfast. Meanwhile, if there was a test then, I also did not have time to review. Everything is in hurry in order to get to class on time! Nevertheless, something changes after I start to get up early. I have time to enjoy my great breakfast, study, and go to school leisurely. Now I do know what I want, what person I want to be and how I should do, and get up much earlier than one year ago. Although sometimes I may still accidentally stay up and oversleep, I will try my best to thoroughly abandon that bad habit and have a brand new life.

Three Types of Vacations - (3) - Final Version

There are three types of vacations which are divided from the distance to the destination. The first type is domestic vacation. The domestic vacation usually spent >lasts about three days to seven days. Therefore, the cost is comparatively >relatively lower; and there are more scenery we can enjoy. We can leisurely and slowly enjoy the marvelous landscapes. For example, in Taiwan, if we live in Taipei and we want to arrange a domestic vacation, we can go to the midst of Taiwan, such as Taichung, Changhua and Nantou. In addition, if we keep going south, we can go to Yunlin, Chiaya and Tainan; until we reach the south district Kaohsiung and Pingtung. Taking the THSR or TRA is the most convenient way we can choose; we can only spend about two to three hours taking the THSR to the farthest district. Driving a car is also an easy and usual way to travel. It cannot >will not be limited by the place where the train or bus cannot arrive at. For example, I had a pretty wonderful time with my family this New Year vacation. My parents took us to Changhua, Yunlin and Chiaya to have a three-day family trip. We went to many sightworthy >breathtaking landscapes where were not so crowded, such as “寒溪泥”, “萬年峽谷” and “五元二角”. The trip not only cost economically but also gave me countless pleasant memories.  Choosing two or three districts to sightsee does not take too much time and cost >money. Moreover, we can enjoy the views much deeply.
The second type of vacation is travelling in the neighboring countries. It generally takes about five days to ten days. Consequently, the cost will be more expensive than the domestic vacation’s cost; but we can only have a few views due to the higher cost of the air tickets and traveling expenses. Joining a tour group can save us a lot of money; however, we cannot enjoy our free time because of catching up the travel schedule. Most of the Taiwanese will take Korea, Japan, China, Singapore, Indonesia or Malaysia to >as their first time travel country. In many neighboring countries, I have >had gone to Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand since >when I was a child. I extremely love to travel to the Southeast Asia. The warm and genial sunshine, the pearl-white beach, the tasty and refreshing coconut milk, the lively and lighthearted music and the relaxed >relaxing and simple lifestyle in Southeast Asia were all my biases >favorites and made me linger on with no thought of leaving. If I have enough money and time, I will spend my vacation there again.
The third type of vacation is traveling in the countries which do not belong to Asia. Generally speaking, it takes about ten days or even two months. Therefore, it takes the most >more money and time; hence, it must have its difficulty. Half of the Taiwanese cannot afford the high payment of traveling to Europe, America even Australia. If we want to reach these places, the first thing we need to solve is the cost of air ticket. It must spend >usually costs beyond twenty thousands. From the viewpoint of normal Taiwan people, twenty thousand may be their income in a month. Needless to say, the payment >cost of the whole journey must be so high that no normal >average Taiwanese People can afford it. Take myself for an example, I have never gone to the countries which do not belong to Asia. If the whole circumstance was possible for me to go abroad, I must absolutely seize the chance.
To sum up, the experiences and memories which we get from the journey >travelling cannot be measured by money. These invisible harvests can widely extend our experiences and knowledge, open our view and even enrich our life. They are fairly significant and just like an irreplaceable treasure in our living. No matter what kind of travel, they must have their values and are worth trying. It is better to travel far than to read voluminously. If in the future you have the chance to travel, no matter to foreign or domestic countries, please do not hesitate, just pack up your baggage and then go your way. You will discover that you get more that you think!

New Year’s Resolution – Get up Early (2)

PEER REVIEW FOR ESSAYS
  • What part needs the most attention in the next draft?
1.Supporting the last part with more examples.(by Corina)
2.Maybe she can describe more details on the essay.(by Lisa)

When I was a senior high school student, I needed to get up at 5 o’clock to take buses everyday because of the remote school. After I got into college, I felt I can get more freedom than before. Therefore, I started to let myself loose. I did not almost go to the first class at eight o’clock, because I gradually cannot get up at six o’clock in the latest one year.
I had a bad habit of doing things dilatorily. Every time after I came home, I was first used to play computer, have a dinner and watch television. When I realized that I had homework to do, it was usually about ten or eleven o’clock. Then I would reluctantly sit at the desk, started to do what I should do. I did not finish my homework until the wee hours. A second cause was I did not find out my main goal in life. Getting up, going to school, taking classes, going home, having dinner, taking shower and then going to bed – my life was completely occupied by these dull, fixed and regular trifles.
As a proverb goes – “The early bird catches the worm.” Morning is truly the most significant time in the whole daytime because human is clearest in the morning. We can do hundreds of meaningful thing effectively and energetically without disturbance before this world awakes from the dawn. Take myself as an example; I used to get up just few hours before the classes began. I was always in a great hurry after awake; therefore, I usually could not have a breakfast.

Three Types of Vacation - (2)

There are three types of vacation which are divided from the distance to the destination. The first type is domestic vacation. The domestic vacation usually spent about three days to seven days. Therefore, the cost is comparatively lower; and more scenery we can enjoy. We can leisurely and slowly enjoy the marvelous landscapes. For example, in Taiwan, if we live in Taipei and we want to arrange a domestic vacation, we can go to the midst of Taiwan, such as Taichung, Changhua and Nantou. In addition, we keep going south; we can go to Yunlin, Chiaya and Tainan; until we reach the south district Kaohsiung and Pingtung. Taking the THSR or TRA is the most convenient way we can choose, we can only spend about two to three hours taking the THSR to the farthest district. Driving a car is also an easy and usual way to travel. It cannot be limited by the place where the train or bus cannot arrive. For example, I had a pretty wonderful time with my family this New Year vacation. My parents took us to Changhua, Yunlin and Chiaya to have a three-day family trip. We went to many sightworthy landscape where were not so crowded, such as “寒溪泥”, “萬年峽谷” and “五元二角”. The trip not only cost economically but also gave me countless pleasant memories.  Choosing two or three districts to sightsee does not take too much time and cost. Moreover, we can enjoy the views much deeper.
The second type of vacation is travelling in the neighbor countries. It generally takes about five days to ten days. Consequently, the cost will be more expensive than the domestic vacation’s cost; but we have a few views due to the higher cost of the air tickets and traveling expenses. The Analysis of a Poetry - Billy Collins’s "Weighing the Dog"

After the final exam, I read some poems and write down my reflections and analyses. Although this poem's title is "Weighing the Dog", in fact the speakers talked about a broken relationship between the speakers and his lover. At first, I tried to use my imagination to figure out what the true meaning behind the literal words and phrase was, but I still did not make sense of the poem. Because it was really confusing and nonsensical that the author clearly narrated about the process of weighing the dog. It must have a real implication behind these simple phrases. Therefore, I tried to be the speakers in this poem, and I gradually grasped the general idea of this poem, but I do not still understand the detailed points in this poem.

Weighing the Dog
It is awkward for me and bewildering for him
as I hold him in my arms in the small bathroom,
balancing our weight on the shaky blue scale,

but this is the way to weigh a dog and easier
than training him to sit obediently on one spot
with his tongue out, waiting for the cookie.

With pencil and paper I subtract my weight
from our total to find out the remainder that is his,
and I start to wonder if there is an analogy here.

It could not have to do with my leaving you
though I never figured out what you amounted to
until I subtracted myself from our combination.

You held me in your arms more than I held you
through all those awkward and bewildering months
and now we are both lost in strange and distant neighborhoods.
Billy Collins (b. 1941)

In Billy Collins’s Weighing the Dog, he conveyed a much deeper concept than simply weighing a dog. It talked about a broken relationship. The dog symbolized his lover. The first and the second stanza – “It is awkward for me and bewildering for him as I hold him in my arms in the small bathroom, balancing our weight on the shaky blue scale, but this is the way to weigh a dog and easier than training him to sit obediently on one spot with his tongue out, waiting for the cookie.” The speaker, on using the method with the dog, he found an analogy to his lover. When they were together, he could easier measure his lover’s love just like training the dog to sit obediently on one spot with his tongue out, waiting for the cookie. I think when they were together, the girl was willing to do everything for the speaker, and then she might just expect a love from him in return just like the dog. However, after separating with the girl, the speaker discovered her significant and the distance between them; thereby he might say “It is awkward for me...” The lover’s affection or heart was far away from the speaker, so the speaker used the metaphor to describe that nowadays when he wanted to know the dog’s weight, he needed to takes the awkward method. Their relationship was not as close as before, and the speaker thought he could not gradually understand and feel his lover’s affection as easily as yesterday. Collins talked about in the third stanza – “With pencil and paper I subtract my weight from our total to find out the remainder that is his, and I start to wonder if there is an analogy here”, it means that only when he ignored himself did he realize how important his lover was. In the fourth stanza – “It could not have to do with my leaving you though I never figured out what you amounted to until I subtracted myself from our combination”, the speaker never realized the girl’s value until he started to leave; by that he just knew what the girl had contributed to their relationship.

The Analysis of Reading Poetry - Sylvia Plath’s "Metaphors"

Last two weeks, I read Sylvia Plath’s Metaphors. I want to analyze this poem, because it use lots of metaphors. Even its title is also a metaphor. Therefore, I spend some time to figure out what  the meaning of the poem is, what the poet wants to talks about, and what each of the metaphor in the poem symbolize. The second reason that I chose Metaphor to write an analysis is that if people read it only by the literal meaning, it totally confusing. We need to use imagination, and then the sentences just make sense.

Metaphor
I'm a riddle in nine syllables,
An elephant, a ponderous house,
A melon strolling on two tendrils.
O red fruit, ivory, fine timbers!
This loaf's big with its yeasty rising.
Money's new-minted in this fat purse.
I'm a means, a stage, a cow in calf.
I've eaten a bag of green apples,
Boarded the train there's no getting off.
Sylvia Plath (1932-1963)

Fist, I define the literary technical device - metaphor and then discuss its usage in Sylvia Plath’s MetaphorsMetaphor is a figure of speech in which an implied comparison is made between two essential unlike things that actually have something in common; in metaphor, the comparison is not expressed but is created when a figurative term is substituted for or identified with the literal term.
Plath chooses many metaphors to describe her pregnancy in this poem. The poem is actually a riddle, which is revealed in the first line – “I'm a riddle in nine syllables,” Next, in the second Plath describes herself firstly with visual metaphors. Elephants and ponderous houses both remind people of the images of figures that are massive and bulky, as she feels weighty in her pregnant body. However, there are other connotations. Elephants have very long gestation periods. Plath’s pregnancy may feel endless. Moreover, a house is not only the image of a ponderous item but also a family container. There is the Biblical connotation of the body as “house of the soul.” In the third sentence – “A melon, strolling on two tendrils” the reader can easily picture a pregnant woman’s round belly and thin legs just as a melon strolling on two tendrils.
The fourth sentence is “O red fruit, ivory, fine timbers!” One after the other, Plath also uses the metaphor. Red fruit is a Biblical allusion “fruit of thy womb” and clearly relates to having a child. In addition, I think the internal melon is a red fruit, just like the color of the new-born babies. Ivory and fine timbers both have metaphors: the ivory is the most valuable and costliest thing on an elephant’s body; the house is worthlessness without the fine timbers which is constructed from. These three figures are all the metaphors that describe the unborn child’s importance. The fifth line – “This loaf’s big with its yeasty rising”, the line about a rising loaf of dough, is an even more understandable metaphor, because there is a modern pun on a familiar disparaging reference to pregnancy as "a bun in the oven." The sixth line also uses the metaphor again. Plath describes herself as “Money’s new-minted in this fat purse”. Minting is the process of making coin from base metal. Coins are placed in a purse; thereby a fat purse is a prize, due to have many coins inside. The purse has no great worth in itself, but contains great value. The sixth line is the metaphor about the relationship between mother and child – Plath is just like the purse; without the valuable child, she is just an ordinary person.
In the seventh line – “I’m a mean, a stage, a cow in calf”, Plath describes herself as a means, a stage, a cow in calf. A means is that she is just a way for a baby to be born, but does not feel maternal. A stage is that the child is on the center of the stage, while the mother is just the platform for the child’s performance. Then a mother is just as the breeding cow that is valued for the calves she can produce. In the eighth line – “I’ve eaten a bag of green apples”, Plath also uses metaphor. First, when someone eats an entire bad of apple, he/she must is extremely fill up. Moreover, the apples are green. Green fruit is sour. People must feel pain after finishing a whole bag of sour apples; the feeling is just like a pregnant woman having a morning sickness. Furthermore, there are more abundant meanings than that: it could be another Biblical allusion. Eve was strictly punished for eating just one apple in the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, while Plath feels that she must have eaten the whole bag, so she suffers such a painful feeling. The most important is that the apple reminds the reader of the Biblical consequence of Eve’s origin sin: God punished Eve with bringing suffering on all women during childbirth. “Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children.” (Genesis 3: 16) The last line – “Boarded the train there’s no getting off”, the train that the woman can not get off is the process of the birth. Nothing can stop the train until it arrives at the destination - it is just like nothing can stop a pregnant woman until she delivers the baby. In the whole poem, Plath uses at least fourteen metaphors. The nine lines all have metaphors.
In this poem, Plath choose many metaphor to describe her pregnancy. I feel that theses metaphor are describing that she does not enjoy the the "miracle" time. she seems to be complaining about the time she is pregnant and is excited until nine months is over.

The Controversy about the 18 Optional Literary Credits - (2)

The English department of our school, Soochow University, rules that students in this department must study >choose at least eighteen literary elective credits out of fifty three elective credits except the two required literary courses that are Introduction of >to Western Literature and Introduction to English Literature before graduating >graduation. In my opinion, the eighteen elective literary credits are too many to most students. The first reason is that when students are freshmen, there are already two required literary courses that are Introduction of >to Western Literature and Introduction to English Literature. When students study the two courses, they may know that their interests of the courses. For instance, after taking credits of the two courses, students will have the basic knowledge and study skills of the western literature. After studying the two courses, I believe that I have the basic knowledge such as the tradition of old Greek and Rome, Bible literature and so on, also, study skills such as simile, irony and so on. With this basic knowledge, it will be enough for us to understand western world and whether to study further or not; it can be easily decided to >by everyone. The rule of the eighteen literary elective credits are too much >is not reasonable and I/we think that the number of the credits should be decided by every student.
The second reason that the eighteen optional literary credits are too many is based on one of our department’s educational goals - the curriculum is designed to improve students’ listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating abilities so that they are equipped with language aptitude and specialties in related fields for future careers. Besides the solid and basic language training, students can follow their interests and career plans to choose three academic groups - English and American Literature, linguistics, practical English application. Therefore, in order to achieve the education that is based on each student's potential, interest and life planning, the school should not limit students to elect eighteen optional literary credits in >out of the fifty-three optional credits before graduation. Take myself as an illustration >example; I am a double-major student, for the sake of avoiding education retardation >being late in graduation I need to select the literary credits. In order to reaching the standard of "eighteen" optional literary credits before graduation, I have no choice but to give up the chance to study translation courses which I am interested in. However, when I was a freshman, I was completely indifferent toward literature matters. Finally, when I take the literary class, my attitude is a little reckless and careless;in the meanwhile I feel quite depressed and impotent. Although I clearly know that that it is not a right attitude toward my study, I can not just raise my passion for literature and poetry which I am definitely disinterested in. It violates the educational goals that say "follow students' interests and career plans". To sum up, there is a huge room for the discussion and the reduction of the eighteen credits.

The Practice of a Description - The First Time to Pick My Idol Up(2)

As I arrive at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport at 10 o'clock, my friends and I hurriedly search for the Terminal I in the airport lounge just like having ants in our pants. Losing the sense of direction, I try to make myself calm and then seek for the aid of the service counter. Moving in the direction of the Terminal I with the brick steps, we are all excited and fevered.
The situation in the Terminal I that day
When we finally reached, hundreds of fans, who waited for the arrival of the Korean pop male group - INFINITE(인피니트), come >came into our sights. There are >were about three hundred INSPIRIT(인스피릿), the official name of INFINITE's fans) who waited for the arrival and surrounded the glass fences in the arrival waiting area - almost eighty percent are >were females, and the remainder are >were all males. Whoever carries >carried either the high-technique camera or the smart phone, discussed how he/she will >would do when the idols arrived and how deep he/she had been obsesses >obsessed with INFINITE. As time passes >passed by, most fans gradually lose >lost patience, started to hanging >hanged out in the arrival hall, and sit >sat chatting and taking some breaks. Suddenly, thundering scream rushed to my ears, I raised my head and stand >stood on tiptoe, and try >tried to move to the front line so that I can >could clearly know what happened. To everyone's surprise, the monitor of the timetable turned to the word "Arrived" from the words "on air". The uproarious sounds from chatting, laughing and joking are >were getting louder and louder. Everyone is >was ready for INFINITE's arrival with the expected and impatient face. I am >was just like having the butterflies in my stomach.
After a half hour, around half past eleven, the deafening shrills instantly bursted out, I watched my idols walking from the door of the Terminal I. The seven members give >gave all the fans the wave in greeting. My heart almost leaps >leaped out with excitement when I watched my favorite member - Lee Sungjong(이성종) cracking an angelic but a little weary smile with >to my own eyes and walking away. However, it is >was a pity that I only see >saw him within 1 second because I was immediately jostled away by the crazy and mad crowd. Countless fans raised their cameras, smart phones, supporting boards, meticulously prepared letters and presents to welcome the seven charming princes. The whole situation totally loses >lost control. In about 20 seconds, INFINITE go >went aboard, and the stream of people are >were just like the surging waves highly beast >beat upon the rocks and howled upon the seashore; then the waves calmed down abruptly. The huge throngs of people hastily empty >emptied the entire lobby, and we are >were just back to school to go to the next classes.
